What Is Key Word Sign (KWS)?
Key word sign is a powerful communication tool for parents, carers, educators and professionals. Here in Australia, we borrow signs from Auslan (Australian Sign Language) to support pre- and non-verbal children to communicate.
KWS is used with speech, and will not delay a child’s speech, but instead bridge the communication gap and allow them to communicate their wants, needs and interests while speech is still developing.
Connect & Communicate
For children with significant speech and language delays, KWS empowers them to connect and communicate with people around them and offers unique benefits compared to other AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication).
Parents who have adopted key word sign like that it is off-screen, you don’t need an iPad to communicate, and that you can’t forget it at home or in the car. KWS is also a natural way of communicating that for many children yields excellent results.
KWS Sessions
KWS early childhood intervention sessions are available to children with a diagnosis that has or is likely to cause a significant speech and language delay and is eligible for funding under the NDIS.
