Behavioural strategies for preschoolers…
From Tabitha, a clinical registrar Psychologist.
Here are a few strategies when working on managing our little ones big emotions to make it easier on everyone involved.
1.Setting clear boundaries and expectations:
• Use simple, directive and concise language – less is more!
e.g. “use a quiet voice” rather than “when you yell in public it’s not okay.”
• Demonstrate and model the behaviour you’re after.
e.g. show them what gentle hands look like through physical prompts.
• Be consistent.
e.g. Use a song or timer every pack-up.
2. Structured environments work a charm:
• Children love to know clear routines.
e.g. Place a weekly schedule on the fridge.
• When routine’s aren’t possible tell them what’s coming up next.
e.g. “After shopping we’re going to see nanny and pop and then home for bedtime.”
• Use a timer for tasks like pack up time.
• Use a specific song for certain tasks like washing hands.
• Use an easily accessible visual cue for each step in a task like using the toilet.
3.Unconditional positive regards:
• For wanted behaviour use positive reinforcement (i.e. rewards like stickers) or their favorite activity.
• Try to match the reward with the behaviour.
• Use praise and positive language “you packed up so well.”
• Model wanted behaviours.
e.g. Demonstrate respectful communication like please and thank you.
